The following are 3 different methods of installing stone coated steel
roofing to achieve extra insulation value & California Tilte 24 Compliance.

Method #1

 

Over Roofing Underlayment

Over a Composite Roof

Whether building over a layer of roofing underlayment or over a composition roof. SRS builds a batten system that consists of; vertical 1x4’s and horizontal 2x2’s, nailed into the frame work of the house. This creates a 2 ¼ inch above deck air space. This method creates three times the amount of air space required on page 158 & 159 of the Building Energy Efficiency Standards. (Title 24)

Method #2

 

Building Over Wood Shake (1)

When building over wood shake, SRS builds a batten system that consists of; vertical 1x4’s and horizontal 2x2’s, nailed into the frame work of the house. This creates a 2 ¼ inch above deck air space. This method creates three times the amount of air space described on page 158 & 159 of the Building Energy Efficiency Standards.(Title 24) As an added bonus, when building over shake, SRS installs 1 ½ inch foil faced fiberglass insulation in between the 2x2’s, this will give added insulation as well as fire protection. Leaving the existing shake roof in place provides an even greater degree of insulation value.

Method #3

 

Built over plywood and underlayment, over spaced
sheathing & underlayment or over a composition roof

¾ inch above deck air space &
1 ½ inch solid Styrofoam Panel

This method calls for the same batten systems as described in method #1, built over plywood and underlayment, over spaced sheathing and underlayment or over a composition roof. SRS then installs solid Styrofoam panels over the 1x4’s and in between the 2x2’s. Although we do not need the vertical 1x4’s, SRS typically installs them to create both a ¾ inch air space, as well as a 1 ½ inch space filled with the solid Styrofoam panels. This far exceeds any requirements demanded on pages 158 & 159 of the Building Energy Efficiency Standards (Title 24)
